Defensive Footwork Basics
Stance, slide, sprint, contain. Footwork is the floor of every defensive concept.
Definition
Defensive footwork covers the stance, slide, drop-step, and recovery sprint that allow a defender to stay in front of, or rebuild in front of, an attacking ball-handler.
Why it matters
All defensive schemes fail if individual defenders can't keep the ball in front. Footwork is the prerequisite.
Examples
- Stance: feet wider than shoulders, weight on the balls of the feet.
- Slide: push off the trail foot, don't cross your feet.
- Drop-step: when beaten, open hips and sprint to recover the angle.
Practical application
- Daily 5-min footwork warm-up: stance, slide, drop, sprint.
- Mirror drills with a partner — no ball, just feet.
Common mistakes
- Crossing feet on the slide.
- Standing tall and reaching instead of moving the feet.
