Defensive Transition
Stop the ball, build the wall, match up from inside out. Most transition points are given away, not earned.
Definition
Defensive transition is the period from a turnover or shot until a set half-court defense. The goals are: stop the ball, protect the rim, then match up.
Why it matters
Most efficient offense in basketball is open-floor scoring. Killing transition is the cheapest defensive improvement available.
Examples
- First-back rule: nearest player sprints to the rim, not their man.
- Inside-out matching: cover the basket first, then find shooters.
Practical application
- Tag film for stop-the-ball failures vs matchup failures — they're different problems.
- Practice 4v5 transition disadvantage with stop-the-ball rules.
Common mistakes
- Sprinting back to your assigned man instead of to the rim.
- Two defenders on the ball, leaving a trailing three.
