Press Break Principles

Beat the press with two passes, not seven dribbles. Get the ball to the middle and attack downhill.

Definition

Press break principles describe how to advance the ball against full- and three-quarter-court pressure: middle, middle, middle.

Why it matters

Most turnovers vs the press come from sideline traps. Middle ball + early ball-side post = press dead.

Examples

  • Inbound to the middle of the floor, never the corner.
  • Ball-side post flash to receive over the top.

Practical application

  • Drill 4v5 disadvantage break with a middle-only rule.
  • Teach pivot reads under pressure before sprint reads.

Common mistakes

  • Inbounding to the sideline and trapping yourself.
  • Dribbling into traps you saw forming.

Take it into practice

  • Handle the Pressure
