Paint Touch Game
Train decision-making around paint touches — drive, kick, swing.
Description
Play live 4v4 in the half court starting from a coach-fed closeout. Offense must touch the paint before shooting; otherwise the basket doesn't count. Award a bonus point if the offense produces a paint touch on a second drive after the ball has been kicked.
The constraint
Possession only counts if it includes at least one paint touch before a shot. +1 bonus for a 2nd-side paint touch.
CLA principle
Task constraint biases the affordance landscape toward penetration and kick-outs.
Coaching points
- Drive with intent — the help has to react.
- Catch ready to drive again — second-side attack is the point.
- Spacing first; without it the paint is closed.
Common mistakes
- Driving into a crowd without a kick read.
- Standing on the catch instead of attacking the closeout.
