Drive and Kick

The simplest engine of advantage basketball: a drive collapses the defense, a kick to an open shooter punishes the rotation.

Definition

Drive-and-kick is the basic unit of modern half-court offense. A player drives into the gap, defenders help, the ball moves to the player whose defender helped.

Why it matters

It is the most repeatable way to generate an open shot in basketball, and the foundation of nearly every modern offense.

Examples

  • Nail help on the drive → kick to the slot.
  • Low help on the drive → kick to the corner.

Practical application

  • Teach the kick before the finish — willingness to give it up is the skill.
  • Constrain practice so the drive is rewarded only when it produces a kick or a layup.

Common mistakes

  • Driving without intention to score, so the defense doesn't have to help.
  • Driving into a crowd without a kick read.
